History

Saint John, NB
1903

The mouth of the Saint John River was first discovered by Europeans in 1604 during a reconnaissance of the Bay of Fundy undertaken by French cartographer Samuel de Champlain. The day upon which Champlain sighted the mighty river was St. John The Baptist’s Day, hence the name, which in French is Fleuve Saint-Jean. The city has the same name in English as well as French.

The strategic location at the mouth of the Saint John River was fortified by Charles de la Tour in 1631. The fort was named Fort Sainte Marie (AKA Fort La Tour) and was located on the east side of the river. To the west of the Saint John River, Fort Saint-Jean was later built (c. 1790).

Dwight & Cheryl Reimer

We are the proud new owners of the Earle of Leinster B&B.

We began our married lives together in NB more than 35 years ago. Since then we have lived in different parts of Canada, but mainly in Kelowna BC where we were originally from. While there Cheryl worked at Walmart for 19 years and Dwight has been a professional photographer for over 20 years.

As much as we enjoyed our professions after all those years we felt it was time to move in a different direction and remembered NB with fond memories – after all, it was where our first son was born (we also had a daughter in Manitoba and one in BC and now have 7 adorable grandchildren). The more relaxed Maritime lifestyle, the friendliness of the people, the heritage features, and all the antiques drew us to Saint John.

We enjoy entertaining and so were very excited to be able to purchase an established B&B in the Uptown Saint John area, especially one steeped in such rich history that is rarely found in British Columbia.

We are already enjoying the many stories of our guests and residents and invite you to a comfortable room and cheery breakfast where we hope to hear many more.

House Rules

Basically we just ask you to be the guest that you would want someone else to be if you were staying at our B&B.

Quiet hours are from 10pm – 7am

No pets

No smoking or drugs

Breakfast

We provide a hot and delicious breakfast for our guests and do cater to gluten free and a limited variety for vegan.

However due to our small kitchen unfortunately we are not able to provide catered meals and are limited to changes in the menu.

We are also limited in dining room space so have an 8am or a 9am sitting on a first come, first served basis.

(Breakfast menu and times are discussed in detail at registration)

Parking

Free street parking or limited lane parking (3 cars).

(We only have one side parking so it is much easier to explain parking upon arrival).

Check In & Check Out

Checking in is from 2-6 pm but there are exceptions for early check in and we do provide late arrival instructions.

As we are not always at the B&B we do ask if you could give us a call about 10-15 minutes before arriving – otherwise you may be waiting for us to arrive rather than us waiting for you to arrive.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellation can be made up to 3 days before arrival.
